VST reality check

Updated: Apr 22, 2022

So, should this happen at at test…..the test would go on. I live in constant awe of Gusto’s skill. Today his work ethic and determination left me speechless. Which, temporarily, made me unable to support his amazing efforts. This track was 75” old (thank god). My goal was contaminated surfaces, I anticipated heavy left over contamination from yesterday…..not senior pep day today. please listen with sound on…….or you’ll miss how brilliant this sound sensitive dog is.

Trying to clarify test vs train. Test mode I want him to show me behaviors that I could easily read at a test. I never would have crossed the road with what he gave me, if we’d been at a test. Train is a confidence building process, and where I spend 98% of my time. I’ll pose a question to him, augment the track so that the track shows him the answer, and rewards him for getting it correct. My ultimate goal, like in the field, is to be invisible behind him.

I am impressed by his focus with all the noise and people trying to run into him! What would you have done if people were parked on your track?

Saber found Senior Pep day to be very offensive. I told her to take notes on Gus' behavior.

I have asked Kyla about how to train vehicle parked on the track. Betty asked about a school bus parked across the track, which our dogs could easily go under, but we couldn’t. I’ll let you know Kyla’s thoughts.

He handled Senior day like a pro!

Watching this I believe I am 'backing up' (when Jack struggles) too soon. You stood your ground a ton longer than I would have (especially after the encounter with the kids when he moved from non veg to the knoll with veg and then again coming out of the playground area). Is that because you know where the track goes or am I indeed backing up too soon? Or change of cover so just be still and let him acclimate? And as I ponder, what is the benefit to standing still, i.e. patience Mary Ann !, vs. three steps back? Young inexperienced dog (handler learning his cues) vs. mature experienced dog (handler r…

I switched immediately from ‘test’ (see what he will do) to ‘train’ (let’s make this successful, and bail if we can’t) before I put his harness on. So, my plan was to support his efforts, go with weak indications, and not ask him to work too hard (the first leg being hard enough for 3 training days🤣). That mindset kept me from backing up, and knowing where the track was certainly helped with that decision. If Pep Day hadn’t happened, and he indicated the road crossing and then didn’t take it, I’d try to get him to check the other side first, and then back up. He wouldn’t take the lead a cross, which limited my options, and showed m…
