Winter Wear and Gear Recommendations
Several things have already been recommended to combat the cold, winter weather while tracking. I am going to list those here, but please add if you have favorites that will keep us all warm and upright.
Pants: Duluth Trading Company's Flexpedition Pants. They are wind resistant and fleece lined. Recommended by Judi. And I'll second them - they are my go to winter hiking pants.
Traction in winter weather: YakTrax are a traction system that slips over your shoes for traction on packed snow and ice. Recommended by Anne and Carol.
Shirts and socks (and pants if you like to layer): SmartWool. It is Merino wool that is soft and wicks sweat away from your body helping regulate body temperature. The 250 base layer is my favorite shirt, but the 150 is nice for warmer days. Smartwool makes shirts, socks, leggings, etc.
I also like Bombas socks that are made from Merino wool too.
A merino wool Buff is a nice accessory too.
Ski Pants: On the coldest of days wear my ski pants, but I've also never been accused of being a fashion maven. They are warm, light weight and easy to move in.
Footwear:
Muck boots – will keep your feet warm and dry https://muckbootcompany.com/
Good hiking shoes/boots for warmer/drier days. You may want to add gators.
Neo overshoes can be worn over running shoes.
Vests
Shooting vests - they are mesh, hip length, and cool in warmer weather
Duluth gardening vest (cotton, not as cool), elastic at the top of the pockets which helps hold stuff in.
Rain Ready
Rain Suits: Frog Toggs
Rite in the Rain: Pens, paper, note pads, clipboards, etc. https://www.riteintherain.com/
Tracking Lines:
I’ve been playing with a new tracking line. It’s flat polypropylene with rubber tracers added for grip. I like the 15mm (I think…actually haven’t used it yet!). If several of you are interested, I suggest one person take the lead and place the order to save on shipping (from The Netherlands, $20). There are a couple of things to be aware of, so whoever takes the lead, please talk to me before ordering. the line is ridiculously cheap. You’ll need to have ia clasp attached to the dog end, and some sort of finish done to your end. https://www.paracord.eu/catalogsearch/result/?q=textile+ppm+webbing+with+rubber+tracers
I also bought at 20mm premade line.. Same material, it says cotton but it’s not. Make sure you order 40’. I don’t put a handle on the end as it can grab things in the woods and slow our progress. https://redlinek9.com/collections/leashes-long-lines/products/3-4-easy-grip-long-line?variant=44330803986647
