a. Train XT LAST and LEAST
b. Take your time getting to age—lay the most solid foundation you possibly can
c. Criteria does not change as the track age changes—the dog should look the same at 5 minutes as he does at 5 hours
d. Overnight is interesting, but not especially useful
e. Train components. Train components. Train components. If Ed Presnall, Mike Roehers, Sil Sanders, Steve White, Sandy Gantz and every other well known tracking instructor/expert in the US trains in components….and it’s what I recommend…please, until you have more experience than these people, train components. Components will allow you do identify weaknesses and address them, while increasing or at worst maintaining, your dog’s confidence
i. Starts
ii. Turns
iii. Articles
iv. Obstacles
v. Duration/length
vi. Age
vii. Cross Tracks
f. So please, if you have a component you’d like to address in class, or it’s the next one in your rotation, please let me know. We have limited room, our tracks will be short. Let’s get the most bang for our training buck!!!
1. Starts - pretty good, always a work in progress 2. Turns - have been on point. 3. Articles - have greatly improved. Sometimes new ones/odd things are still a challenge. Always a work in progress. 4. Obstacles - have not introduced 5. Length - she’s done some pretty long tracks because I guess I like walking 🤷🏼♀️ But she has not done a full length TDX track to my knowledge. 6. Age - starting to introduce longer aged tracks 7. Cross tracks - have not intentionally introduced but she’s been exposed 😂 What do we need to focus on…everything. On a more serious note what to focus on is one of the many areas I need guidance 😃
